What if you could analyze cells, bacteria and particles? Fully automatically and in real time?

We thought about it – and we called it ODIN.

INNOVATION FOR SCIENCE.

Observe. Detect. INvestigate.

ODIN
ODIN

ODIN is a new generation machine vision system specifically designed to the requirements of modern science. It offers state-of-the-art imaging combined with powerful and easy-to-use analysis and control software. Due to the real-time data processing at up to 10000 frames per second it is easy to control and automate experiments as well as equipment with the highest temporal resolution and precision. With our software you can do standard analyses such as dead and live cell counting as well as the analysis of unknown samples and configure the control of your experiment based on the analysis results in an instant. ODIN can do various tasks in an experiment, for example, analyze objects that move through the image field or track their position with highest precision. A few selected application fields are for example:

ODIN combines a fast and sensitive camera with a high-performance processor system and smart analysis algorithms in a single device.

A standard C-mount allows easy integration in experiments and the use of common microscopes and optics.

ODIN works completely autonomously and offers a user-friendly and feature-rich graphical user interface.

Observe, analyse, control and document your experiment with ODIN.

ODIN works extremely fast and precise

It works at up to 10000 images per second and evaluates them fully automatic and in real time.

ODIN doesn’t need buffering and thus allows a direct response to the measurement result.

It analyzes each individual image in a breathtaking time of only 200 microseconds and controls external systems with a precision better than 10 nanoseconds.

ODIN handles all tasks in the process, detection, analysis and sorting in a continuous workflow.

advantages of ODIN
parameters ODIN analyses

ODIN analyzes objects for all visible properties such as size, shape, granularity, perimeter, position, velocity, etc.

ODIN runs smart algorithms, for example to stabilize the background fully automatically to make a measurement independent of illumination effects.

ODIN offers a complete analysis interface, which enables you to easily characterize completely unknown samples in seconds. For instance to find relevant parameters for sorting.

ODIN is designed to be so user-friendly that it can be integrated into experiments within a few minutes and can also be configured in no time to solve the measurement and control task.

One software for all situations

ODIN offers a user-friendly and feature-rich graphical user-interface:

  • Observation: An absolutely latency free live image with all possible settings a modern camera system has to have.
  • Analysis: The possibility to plot all analysis parameters freely selectable against each other while showing the underlying images and their properties.
  • Control: Mark with a simple mouse click in the graph what you are looking for and ODIN programs itself.

Frequently asked questions about ODIN:

In principle with any microscope that has a C-mount or the possibility to install a C-mount. This is the case for most brands like Zeiss, Olympus or Nikon and most microscope types. Additionally, there must be enough space to install ODIN at the C-mount, which is true for most systems.

It is both. You can buy different modules, including the ODIN sensor and control unit separately and upgrade an existing setup/microscope with it or you can ask us to create a complete system solution for your application.

Of course. If you bought a smaller version of ODIN you can upgrade it anytime with new software modules and hardware modules like our pulsed LED illumination system SOL or the multi-color Laser for fluorescence.

In principle the speed is limited by the size of the measurement area. For example, at 400×32 px ODIN can capture and analyze up to 10000 frames per second. We are ultimately limited by the readout speed of the sensor itself. In the case of fluorescent imaging the maximum measurement speed and throughput may be further limited by the emission strength of the sample.

No, ODIN is a standalone system. You don’t have to buy an additional computer or need additional software. ODIN analyzes everything automatically after setup and provides you with final measurement values and corresponding images if necessary.

No, ODIN analyzes general properties of the passing objects like size, granularity, speed, position, intensity and many more independently of the object type.

In principle you can measure in any contrast like bright-field, phase contrast or fluorescence. ODIN simply analyzes what it sees. For example, if you look at a cell with fluorescently labeled DNA (which is concentrated in the nucleus) in bright-field the parameter size will be of the whole cell whereas in fluorescence it will measure only the nucleus. However, if you want to measure for example simultaneously in bright-field and fluorescence you need the alternating measurement module and suitable illumination systems.

Because it analyzes all images in real-time and is therefore able to preselect the data to store. For instance, an easy application would be to store only pictures in which cells are present. All empty pictures are discarded automatically and you have a video with 100% meaningful data. In a more complex case, you could also go for a certain cell type, for example record only images of white blood cells in a whole blood sample.

No, the software of ODIN is highly optimized and therefore made for a specific hardware. This makes it very difficult to use on a conventional PC.

Yes, of course. We have different possibilities to do that. Firstly, we equipped our lab with cameras that allows us to do online demos. We can show you the capabilities of ODIN in droplet-microfluidics analysis and control and imaging flow cytometry with our own samples. Secondly, you can send us a sample and we will measure it in our lab and discuss the results with you or you simply visit us in our labs in Ulm and do the measurement with us. Lastly, an on-site demo is possible in the EU and some other countries, just ask us if it is possible in your region.
